The foreign women who participate in matchmaker programs are not all Russian in origin, although many of these women are from the geographical area of the former Soviet Union and nearby eastern European countries. Economic and financial conditions in many eastern European countries are very bad, unemployment is extremely high, both inflation and recession are rampant and even food and other basic necessities are sometimes scarce. So in Eastern Europe and as in the rest of the world, America still sets the standard for what is considered to be "fine living" and many eastern Europeans and Asians dream of living in the United States. Furthermore, many young women who live in these countries can see no hope for a good life in their future where they live, so there are a significant number of these women who are eager to meet and even marry American men.

The reader should refrain here from making any comparisons between women from Russia or eastern Europe and American women for fear of retaliation from women everywhere. Besides, it is impossible to generalize about an entire culture or actually many different cultures. Try explaining to someone what the typical American girl is like. Are girls from California different from Nebraska girls? Probably yes, but in the same way that girls in California are quite different from each other. Nevertheless, if you have ever met anyone from eastern Europe, you will find they are basically just like us and generally they like just about everything American and so many things that Americans take for granted. Granted this is a generalization, but typically, eastern European females are physically attractive, multi-lingual and well educated and a majority seemingly have a preference for, among other things, American movies, music, clothing and shopping. After meeting someone from Russia, you would immediately wonder why we ever had the "cold war" at all.

Another common trait of eastern Europeans may be their abundance of patience and tolerance for discomfort, not because they are born that way, but because it is a necessary survival trait in a land of scarcity. There are few shopping malls in eastern Europe and what few there are, are frequented mostly by foreign tourists, mainly Americans, Western Europeans and Japanese. If you make a modest, average income by American standards, you would probably be considered "well to do" upper class by eastern European standards. Eastern Europeans who have not traveled extensively in the USA, also tend to believe the almost all Americans are rich. They may or may not think much of our social culture, but they marvel at our financial and economic system. There are many who believe that living in the USA would be a "dream come true".
