Internet Etiquette - No No's and
Know Hows
The 12 Golden Rules to Remember in Connecting Online
Rule 1* Do not use your real name, your real address or real
phone number until you know who you are dealing with. The web is generally a pretty safe
place, but there is no logic in giving out personal information to people who have no need
to know.
Rule 2* Do not ask for the above from anyone else until you have established a solid
relationship. This can be tricky at the beginning of internet relationships. There are no
rules set in stone and you always have to use your own judgement when to reveal all.
Rule 3* Do not send spam, junk or flames. Friendly fire for self protection may be
justifiable but too many net newbies are a real nuisance with their incessant foul
language and bad attitudes.
Rule 4* Do not stalk or badger preliminary contacts. If someone loses interest, let
them go. There are millions of fish in the internet sea.
Rule 5* Do not overly misrepresent yourself. Experienced net talkies all know that a
great many people embellish their age, looks, intelligence, job status, sexual power,
income, geographical location, sex, height, hair color, you name it. This probably doesn't
hurt anyone and it is one of the great advantages of the internet. Anyone can be anything
they want to be. True, it's a fun game to play but if your connection turns serious, it
can be a major disaster if you falsely portrayed yourself.
Rule 6* Be yourself. Many people get so wrapped up in fantasy games that they forget
that any real love connection won't survive if the relationship is based on lies and
half-truths.
Rule 7* Go Slowly. Every personals program and chat site has its own set of general
rules, etiquette and loosely formalized communication structure. If you break the rules
right at the start, you will not be in good standing and it may take some time to redeem
yourself. Its is generally best to hang out for awhile and learn the system before jumping
in with both feet.
Rule 8* Protect your own privacy and the privacy of your internet friends. Again, go
slowly. There are weirdos on the net just like everywhere else. Problem is, you can't see
who is really on the other side so you will want to really get to net know someone before
you even think about inviting them home to dinner. To some extent, matchmaking programs,
have already pre-screened people who should share your own interests.
Rule 9* Have fun and be polite just like you would on a first date. Manners seem to
be lacking just as badly on the web as they are in the outside world. People will be more
impressed with culture and charm, not a "bull in the china shop" attitude.
Rule 10* Don't expect immediate success in making connections. Patience is the true
virtue of internet romance. Sometimes lightening strikes, but just like the physical
world, it normally takes time to build relationships.
Rule 11* Keep one foot on planet earth. Internet relationships are incredibly
powerful and addictive and first timers are especially prone to being swept away. Internet
love is just as real as any other kind and even though you have just as much or even more
chances of finding the real thing on the web, go out for coffee first before you propose
on the net. Either way, you will be glad you did.
Rule 12* Have fun, be yourself and don't spend all of your free time on the web.
Internet friendships can disappear as quickly as they came. Rule of thumb..if your non-web
friends have quit calling you or your children have to make their own meals, its time to
turn off the computer for awhile. Remember, you can't really live in the internet, you can
only visit. You can find things to buy, things to do; you can find romance, you can even
find true love, but if nothing else happens you will most likely find and make new
friends. Whether in web life or non-web life, what else could be more important...it is
friends and lovers who make life worth living. Surf's Up = Go For It!
